5 FUN ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILY FUNCTIONS AND GET-TOGETHERS
2020 has been a tough one, without a doubt. But we’re heading towards the most exciting time of the year where we get to spend time with family and friends and make memories.
Are you planning a family function? Do you have relatives coming to town to spend some downtime with you over the holiday period? As much as you’re looking forward to it, we’re sure that there is a tiny voice at the back of your mind saying, “What are we going to do?”
Planning activities for the holidays or family functions doesn’t need to be a stressful thing. But then, it’s easy for us to say; that’s what we do every day.
So, we’ve put together a few ideas for family activities which may help to smooth the way for a happy, fun-filled holiday period.
FAMILY FUNCTIONS SHOULD BE FUN
If we’re to offer some advice at the outset, we would certainly recommend keeping things simple. Whether you’ve got five people or 50 to cater for, it’s never a good idea to complicate things – you’ll just give yourself aa headache.
GO GEOCACHING
If you haven’t yet been geocaching, you’re in for a treat. Geocaching is simply one of the quickest and most effective ways to get your teens off their phones and outdoors.
The premise is very simple: you make use of GPS coordinates or a geocaching app or website to find hidden items. The value of the item isn’t important, rather it’s the hunt that makes it so exciting.
This is a brilliant way to get the family together in the fresh air and sunshine and have a little fun. Find out more about this innovative pastime and plan a day when the weather is fair to get to know places that you haven’t visited before. The treasure is just a little bonus at the end.
HIRE A ROLLER RINK
If you have a little outdoor space, then this is for you.
A synthetic roller-skating rink can be set up in your back garden and provide hours (days?) of healthy, fun activity for the whole family. You can choose a size to suit your space, from a 5 x 5m rink which can accommodate a maximum of 9 skaters, to a 20 x 20m roller rink for a full family event!

CREATE A FAMILY ALBUM
While it’s great that we have hundreds of photos on our phones of our family and friends, they don’t often see the light of day. If the weather dictates that your day will be spent indoors, then why not get everyone together and create a family album?
Arrange a book or a stack of coloured paper, glue, colours, paints, glitter – whatever your family personality is, and get everyone around the table to contribute.
A small smartphone printer is a great investment which allows you to pull off everyone’s favourite pictures and print them out in a couple of seconds. The time spent looking at pictures, reminiscing, and creating a magical family album together is a wonderful way to spend quality time together.
IMPROV
A group of people who are comfortable around each other and enjoy each other’s company will have so much fun with improv.
Improv, short for improvisation, is a type of live, unscripted theatre which you can perform at home. A scene is set, and each participant is given a character to play. The audience may offer suggestions on topics, but the five basic rules of improv need to be applied as they act out the scene.
- Don’t deny. Essentially, you can’t say no, and you need to accept and work with what the other person says.
- Don’t ask open-ended questions.
- Don’t feel that you have to be funny
- Make your partner look good
- Tell a story
Indoors or outdoors, improv is bound to create some incredible holiday memories.
HOST A CURLING PARTY
The sport of curling has been enjoyed for – literally – centuries.
Did you know that you can hire curling lanes along with everything you need to host a curling tournament at home? Granted, you may not have the skill to sweep or throw like a pro, but you can bet that everyone involved will give it a go.
Portable curling lanes can be set up outdoors or in a garage, or even a bit family function. They are guaranteed to provide hours of fun for all ages, and – who knows – maybe you’ll discover a hidden talent?
Yes, we certainly have a lot to look forward to as we edge closer to the end of the year. It’s time to gather our friends and family close and spend some quality time with them.
